A New Level in Financial Planning for Mashreq Bank

Customer Overview:

Mashreq Bank has provided banking and financial services to millions of customers and businesses since 1967. They are one of UAE’s leading financial institutions with a growing retail presence in the region including Egypt, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain. Their focus is to provide their customers access to a wide range of innovative products and services. Mashreq Bank is invariably among the highest performing banks in the region. The bank has won ‘Best Regional Retail Bank’ title in 2012, 2014 and 2015 at Banker Middle East awards.

Business Need:

Mashreq Bank, who was using IBM Cognos Enterprise Planning for over a decade, wanted to address limitations such as capacity restrictions that required maintaining separate applications, single dimension calculations, executing separate process to update & consolidate data from multiple applications. With the growing business need, such as overseas branches planning, Mashreq bank needed a solution which was not only technologically advanced, but which also removed the limitations that they faced.

Furthermore, Mashreq wanted the solution to be integrated with their Oracle Financial Services Analytical Applications (OFSAA) to allow automatic movement of data between OFSAA and the new solution. In order to start their current year budget cycle on time, the project had to be completed in four months. This was a very challenging task.

Solution:

To address Mashreq Bank’s need, GBM proposed implementation of IBM Cognos TM1 solution. This solution had the flexibility and robustness which Mashreq was looking for in a planning solution. It also provides advanced analytical capabilities. IBM Cognos TM1 solution was integrated with OFSAA to enable seamless data integration between both applications which eliminated manual intervention. The key functional requirements and deliverables included but not limited to headcount planning, capital expenditure planning, staff & administrative expense planning and also cost allocation (by business groups, products & segments) across varied business operations.
